The Vlassakis lab conducts interdisciplinary research at the interface of microfluidic engineering, single-cell & single-molecule analysis, systems biology, and structural biology and biophysics. Thus we encourage researchers from any related discipline to apply by following these instructions:

Research Staff

Please reach out to vlassakis@rice.edu to inquire about other possible research staff positions in the lab.

Postdoctoral Researchers

Postdocs must have obtained their Ph.D. prior to the start of their appointment. Excellent candidates must demonstrate creativity and determination, ideally through a strong record of peer-reviewed publications.

Please reach out to vlassakis@rice.edu if you are graduating from a Ph.D. program in 6-12 months and are interested in applying for external funding to be able to join the Vlassakis lab. Julea will work with you to prepare a competitive fellowship application. Postdoc candidates who are eligible for funding through the Rice University Academy of Fellows are encouraged to contact Julea by late fall to discuss preparing an application for the program.

Graduate Student Researchers

Ph.D. Students

We currently have multiple openings for Ph.D. students! Interested Ph.D. students from the Bioengineering Ph.D program, the Systems, Synthetic and Physical Biology (SSPB) Ph.D. program, and the Applied Physics Ph.D. program are encouraged to reach out to vlassakis@rice.edu.

Prospective Ph.D. students who are interested in the lab’s research are encouraged to apply to the Ph.D. program in Bioengineering, SSPB or Applied Physics, and email their CV and a one-paragraph summary of research interests to vlassakis@rice.edu.

Masters Students

Masters students in the Applied Bioengineering concentration and research-based specialization should reach out to vlassakis@rice.edu with a one-paragraph summary of research interests.

Undergraduate Researchers

Rice undergraduates who can commit at least 12 hours per week to research during the semester are encouraged to reach out to vlassakis@rice.edu to determine if a research opportunity is available (paid or for academic credits). Students who pursue research as part of BIOE 400/401 will be expected to enroll in 4 credits.

Numerous research experiences for undergraduates (REU) programs exist for undergraduates from Rice or other universities and colleges. Any student interested in applying for an REU program to conduct summer research in the Vlassakis lab can reach out to vlassakis@rice.edu and provide details about your research interests and which REUs are of interest.
